Before becoming a dental hygienist, you should know the duties of this job. A hygienist is supposed to help the dentist in all the dental procedures including surgeries. He or she should prepare the patients before the operations or procedures. A hygienist may be asked to scale and polish the teeth of patients also. He or she takes teeth X-rays, prepares prosthetics for dentures or braces and makes the filling material whenever required. If the hygienists are competent for handling office administration work, they may be entrusted with the tasks of updating the data base of the patients and for handling medicines that should be prescribed for the patients. These people can be requested to control and supervise the office as well as the lab. It is also the duty of the hygienists to give proper counseling to the patients about their oral health care. In other words, the presence of a hygienist in a dental clinic or hospital is very much necessary.
